About the artist:
Gerard Brigden joined the RAF
in 1942 and trained as a Fighter Pilot in Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe),
Egypt and India.
He joined 113 Squadron in 1945
at Yazaygo and flew Hurricanes and Thunderbolts in the Burma Campaign until
the Japanese surrendered, 14th August 1945.
After the War he trained and
qualified as an Architect and from 1953, in the Colonial Service, designed
hospitals and schools in Singapore.
In 1962 he became the Chief
Architect for the new capital city of Islamabad in Pakistan. For this work
he was awarded the OBE by Queen Elizabeth II and became the youngest ever
FELLOW of the RIBA.
He then worked for UNESCO and
the World Bank in Malawi, Kenya and Afghanistan, with a break in 1979-81
to teach Architecture at Louisiana State University, USA.
Gerard is now semi-retired in
France, where he paints and makes Stained Glass to commission.
